A Brand New Writers’ Conference for Eastern NC

Folks I received this email through my connection with a relatively new group called Coastal Carolina Mystery Writers. Once I figure out how to post the Save the Date Flier, I’ll have that up too.

Writers,

The Beaufort County Arts Council and the Pamlico Writers Group are hosting their first annual Pamlico Writers Conference and Literary Contest in Washington, NC on March 2, 2013. Attached is a “save the date” flyer which we hope you will send out to writers and writers groups. The theme is Contemporary Trends in Writing. Putting this together is a big undertaking, and we will need help in order to make it successful. There are several ways you can assist in this adventure.

First, we will need assistance advertising and promoting the event. There are so many talented writers in Eastern North Carolina, and we want to encourage all to participate in the conference workshops and the competition. More information about workshop presenters will be forthcoming. Bland Simpson will be the keynote speaker.

Second, we will be creating a scholarship award for the winning High School writer. The funding for the scholarship will be provided by donations from writers, writers groups, book stores, book clubs, etc. Any assistance you can contribute will be greatly appreciated. We will publish the names of each writer/group that contributes $50.00 or more.  Please remember to pass this information on to High School homeschooling groups.

And last, if anyone wishes to be part of the behind-the-scenes activities, before or during the conference, we welcome volunteers. Please email me at adsilverthorne@yahoo.com if you are interested.

We welcome all comments,
Angela Silverthorne

“I get a fine warm feeling when I’m doing well, but that pleasure is pretty much negated by the pain of getting started each day. Let’s face it, writing is hell.”       –William Styron

Pretty much says it all. I’ve been having minor panic attacks at the thought of working on Rex Appeal. It’s really weird. I’ve never had this problem to this extent before. Trying to power through. Trying to end on an exciting place where I can easily pick up after stopping. Next thing to try is likely to be better living through chemistry. I’m just waiting for the doctor to come back from maternity leave.

The Perils of Naming

One day you may be tempted to write a novel about, say a man who can turn into a dog, a weredog, if you will. Once you realize that, hey, this story is pretty cool, you may think it is funny to name your character something cute, like, I don’t know, Rex. And then you may decide to name your novel the very amusing title, Rex Appeal after your cleverly named main character.

If you do that, you should know that for the next months, and even years of your life you’ll be forced to write weirdly convoluted sentences in order avoid using your character’s name in a possessive manner. Because “Rex’s bowl” or “Rex’s room” or “Rex’s fur” just doesn’t sound or look correct.

But it is and you have to use it, because it’s grammar, dammit.

A New Beginning

I’m very excited to be posting to my brand new blog. It even still has that new blog smell. Mmmmm.

I finally decided to start the blog for several reasons.

1. I need to begin building an audience for my novel Rex Appeal. My writer’s group is very encouraging about Rex, and I will be sharing the progress and any neat bits I think you’ll like. More on Rex in an upcoming blog.

2. I need to prove to myself that I can actually write. I’ve been struggling lately with actually finishing the first draft. I began Rex as a NaNoWriMo novel shortly after I began writing again after a 21-year-long hiatus from writing. I refuse to call it Writer’s Block. It was inertia plain and simple. But after reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, I knew I needed to take up the pen… er, keyboard… again. All was well until this March when I took a break from Rex. Now I find that I’m having borderline panic attacks whenever I think about sitting down to write at it again. I seem to be self-sabotaging myself. Well, I’m pulling myself together and have a new chapter begun. I hope to use the blogging to encourage myself and share with my friends in Write On Right Now.

3. But mostly I’m starting this blog now because I figured out how to get access to the Internet from home for a reasonable, librarian-friendly fee. I don’t have the funds to pay for broadband at home and can’t justify it when I sit in front of the Internet all day at work. So tethering it is. I’ll be able to upload my blog posts by using my iPhone as a personal hot spot. Technology is amazing, ain’t it?

So get ready. Here comes the blog.
